Freshman Academy
The Penn Freshman Academy aspires to join parents and our community in providing a world-class education that prepares each student to grow academically and socially in a safe environment, thus assisting each student in developing the independence and self-sufficiency necessary to succeed and contribute responsibly in a global community.

Early College Academy
Penn High School’s Early College Academy started in the 2014-2015 school year and is designed to offer students a unique opportunity to begin working toward college requirements while simultaneously fulfilling courses for graduation at Penn High School. Penn High School is partnered with Ivy Tech Community College to offer a selection of courses, including dual credit courses, that can potentially earn a student college credits up to an Associate Degree by the time the student graduates. The yearly sequence of courses for the Early College Academy student is specific and required. Students may select elective courses when available.

Fine Arts & Communications Electives
The Penn Fine Arts & Communications Academy offers a multitude of courses to engage students in creativity and self-expression. From Sculpture and Ceramics to Graphic Design; from Shakespeare plays to Broadway Musicals; from Beethoven Symphonies to the music of Duke Ellington; from our literary magazine and yearbook to our broadcast journalism courses and sports journalism opportunities, students at Penn High School have a wealth of resources and experiences available to them within the fine arts and communications curricula. Fine Arts & Communications offers more than 30 courses. A Fine Arts & Communications Pathway can lead to numerous career choices. Learning for students in the Fine Arts & Communications Academy is enhanced by numerous community partnerships.

Health & Human Services Electives
Health and Human Services Academy is committed to creating life-long learners through authentic problem solving, critical thinking, community involvement, and the exploration of the diverse opportunities within the areas of health and human service-related careers.
Joining the Health and Human Services Academy allows students to engage in a smaller, more personal learning community to improve academic achievement and to ready students for both college and careers by engaging in the world outside of school. Courses included in the Health & Human Services Academy Pathway are designed to prepare students for numerous career opportunities. The Health & Human Services Academy has built community partnerships to enhance student learning. There are numerous activities and opportunities available within the Health & Human Services Academy.

Management & Business Electives
Students participating in the Management and Business Academy will develop a better understanding of the business world. Students have the opportunity to take classes for college credit or to work with a local company as a professional intern.
Every company regardless of industry needs business professionals to function, giving students with a business or business-related degree broad career options. Approximately 547,000 new businesses get started each month. In Indiana, 97 percent of all employers are small businesses and women and minority businesses have increased by over 50 percent.

STEM Electives
If you enjoy figuring out how an object works, doing puzzles, understanding the human body, discovering the secrets of nature or creating new applications for existing technology, then consider selecting the STEM Academy. Choosing the STEM Academy will be the beginning of an exploration of fields such as structural design, computer science, nanotechnology, environmental science, assistive technologies, robotics, physics, chemistry and biology. Each of the fields that STEM explores features technology that plays a central role in our daily lives, including cell phones, computers, the Internet, cars, bridges, food and medicines. If these are topics that interest you, STEM is an appropriate choice.

The World Languages Department believes that students living in a global society should learn a second language to develop a deeper understanding of our diverse world as well as an appreciation for other cultures.

Penn High School is committed to providing college and career readiness development in an inclusive learning environment for individual learners and individual learning styles. How to Schedule Your Classes
Now that you’ve explored Freshman and Early College Academies and all the elective options, it’s time to schedule your classes!
Oct. 3 SAT guidelines
Penn High School is hosting the SAT on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Students who are registered should report to Door A between 7:30-7:45 am.
Students must have a valid picture ID, your registration ticket, 2-3 sharpened #2 pencils, an approved calculator if applicable, and may bring a snack.
Students are subject to the following guidelines:
1. You do not have Covid-19 or reason to believe you have Covid-19. Symptoms of Covid-19 include cough, fever, chills, muscle pain, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell.
2. In the past 14 days, you have not come into close contact – within 6 feet – with someone who has a positive covid-19 test or is presumed to have covid-19.
3. To your knowledge, you are not violating any travel restrictions or quarantining requirements.
4. You agree to wear a mask the entire time you're at this test site and follow instructions from testing staff.
5. By entering the testing room, you're accepting the risk of Covid-19 exposure. While we have taken measures to help create a safe environment, unfortunately it isn't possible to remove all risk.
Hybrid Learning schedule
Here is the schedule for Hybrid Learning:
Mondays – All students will attend virtual instruction at home. Students will connect live with their classes. Office hours are 8:05-8:35 a.m. The school day is from 8:55 a.m.-3:17 p.m.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays – Students with the last name beginning with A-L will attend in person instruction. As a result of the delay, drop off time will be at 8:35 a.m. and the in-person school day will be from 8:55 a.m.-3:17 p.m. Students with the last name beginning with M-Z will attend virtual instruction at home with the school day running from 8:55 a.m.-3:17 p.m.
Thursdays and Fridays – Students with the last name beginning with M-Z will attend in-person instruction. As a result of the delay, drop off time will be at 8:35 a.m. and the in-person school day will be from 8:55 a.m. – 3:17 p.m. Students with the last name beginning with A-L will attend virtual instruction at home with the school day running from 8:55 a.m.-3:17 p.m.
HYBRID GOLD/BLACK SCHEDULE
- Virtual Office Hours: 8:05-8:35 a.m.
- Welcoming students: 8:35-8:55 a.m.
- Block 1: 8:55-10:11 a.m. (76 minutes)

- Block 3: 11:39 a.m.-1:55 p.m. (106 minutes, includes 30-minute lunch)
- Block 4: 2:01-3:17 p.m. (76 minutes).

P-H-M Superintendent Dr. Jerry Thacker sent a letter to secondary parents on Feb. 4, 2021 notifying them of the District’s phased in approach to returning Secondary students back to In-person learning. Click to view the Return to Learn Transition Plan.

Black Student Union
The aim of the Penn High School Black Student Union is to bring students of all races together to celebrate all aspects of black culture. Also, to provide resources to further student development and growth in diversity within academics, the community and throughout the Penn-Harris-Madison school corporation.

Meetings: First Black Monday of the Month, after school in Room 118 (3:30-4:15)
Membership is open to all without regard to race, religion, gender or national origin.
There are no club dues required.
Penn Athletics COVID Media Guidelines
If the St. Joseph County Health Dept. returns to mandated COVID Guidelines, these are the Penn Athletics COVID protocols for media:
Access to Athletic events hosted by Penn High School is limited to credentialed/approved media only.
Media must contact the Penn Athletic Department in advance at least six hours before the start of the game on weekdays, or by 3:30 p.m. the Friday prior to Saturday events, with plans to attend Athletics events hosted by Penn High School in order for Athletic Department officials to plan for physical distancing in the media designated areas (Press Box, sidelines, etc.). Send media requests to cover Athletic events at Penn to Curt Rallo at crallo@phm.k12.in.us.
If Media is planning to send more than one employee from their outlet, they must also get approval for extra personnel from Penn Athletics when they send their notification.
Media in attendance at Athletic events hosted by Penn High School must check-in with Penn Athletic Dept. staff at the ticket booth. This will assist Penn Athletics to do contact tracing if it becomes necessary.
Radio and print journalists will be permitted in the Press Box (or at a press table) only. Media must wears masks in the the press box.
Media must request permission from an Athletic Administrator to conduct interviews with student-athletes and coaches.
If in-person interviews are desired after a game, please contact Penn Athletic Director Jeff Hart, Assistant Athletic Director Bridget Williams or Assistant Athletic Director Marie Doan. The interviews can be conducted as long as social distancing can be maintained. The use of lapel microphones will not be permitted; stick microphones are preferred.
If virtual interviews are desired in a non-game situation, please contact Curt Rallo at crallo@phm.k12.in.us to make arrangements. Please make your requests 24 hours in advance if possible to allow time to make arrangements.
Media is asked to conduct a health pre-screening for signs/symptoms of COVID-19 before attending Athletic events at Penn High School facilities.
Proper wearing of masks, covering the nose and the mouth, is required in order to decrease potential exposure to respiratory droplets.
Physical distancing must be maintained at all times.
Media is strongly encouraged to practice good hygiene and utilize hand sanitizer provided at Penn facilities or have their own.

8:05 – 8:25 a.m.: Office Hours
8:25 – 9:25 a.m.: Block 1 (60 minutes)
9:40 – 10:40 a.m.: Block 2 (60 minutes)
11 – 11:30 a.m.: Lunch
11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.: Block 3 (90 minutes – 60 minutes of instruction, plus 30 minutes for Advisory during first Gold day each week; non-Advisory days will be used for club meetings and small group sessions with students and occasional live messages from administration).
1:15 – 2:15 p.m.: Block 4 (60 minutes)
2:15-3:15 p.m.: (Office Hours, Correspondence, Asynchronous work for students)
Athletic Training Staff

Adam Gibson, MS, ATC/L, CES
Graduated from Manchester University in 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training then went on to finish a Master’s Degree in Applied Exercise Science from Concordia University Chicago in 2019 with a concentration in Corrective Exercise. Experience in high school athletics, college athletics (D1 & D3), orthopedic clinics, and professional baseball. Adam plans to start as an Adjunct Faculty Instructor in Manchester University’s, Master’s of Athletic Training (MAT) program starting fall of 2025 while still being part of Penn High School Athletics.

Daniel Hardman, MS, ATC/L
Penn Graduate of the Class of 2016. Daniel graduated from Marquette University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training. He went to Baylor University and completed a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology in 2022. While at Baylor, he was a graduate assistant with Track & Field and Cross Country. Since graduation, Daniel has had experience with University of Washington Football, University of Iowa Track/XC and Gulliver Prep in Miami, Fla., through Pinecrest Physical Therapy. Daniel came back to Penn in February 2025 and started working as one of the school athletic trainers.

- Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state’s statutes, rules and regulations. As a part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
