Mr. Gensic’s Giving Trees Orchard bears fruit!
Three years ago thanks to a P-H-M Education Foundation grant Penn High School Early College teacher Mr. John Gensic had an idea that was able to take root … to plant fruit orchards at some PHM elementary schools; the first was planted at Horizon Elementary. He had elementary students and his Early College students plant the trees in a field behind Horizon.
Now the project is literally bearing fruit! Recently current 3rd graders of Ms. Marci Messer & the students who helped plant the orchard three years ago (who are now Discovery students) went apple & pear pickin'! Click to see the full photo gallery on Horizon’s website.

Penn boasts 12 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists
Penn High School Principal Sean Galiher announced that 12 Penn students have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. Penn’s number of National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists is the second most among Indiana high schools.
Richard Chapple, Abbie Clay, Rajeev Datta, Andrew Kaboski, Noah Lang, Lyvia Li, Kyler Logan, Yewon Oh, David Simonetti, Seunghoon Sun, Karen Wang and Peter Yang were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists.
“We are extremely proud of these students,” Galiher said. “This accomplishment is a culmination of the great efforts of these students including all the wonderful teachers they have had while attending P-H-M schools.”
Approximately 16,000 students across the nation were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million.
More than 1.5 million juniors at 21,000 high schools participated in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in 2018.
National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, and are the highest scoring entrants in their state.
