Academic Competitions
Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl has a varsity and B-team squad that competes against area schools. Four students compete at a time in a four round match on a lockout buzzer system. Ten matches are followed by league tournament play. League leaders can participate in state and national competition.
Model U.N.
Peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development and globalization are all issues that affect the world we live in. Right now, the United Nations General Assembly is discussing issues such as these in order to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world.
Mock Trial
Students will be given a “real life” criminal or civil court case. Students will act out the courtroom proceeding by acting as the witnesses or the lawyers. Students will formulate opening and closing statements, give direct and cross examinations, question witnesses, make objections, and answer directives from the court judge. Teams are awarded points depending on the effectiveness of each witness and lawyer.All students are required to read and understand the testimony, the rules of competition, and the Federal Rules of Evidence.
Math Competitions
Math competitions are offered during school hours and local and state competitions are offered on Saturdays. Top scorers qualify, compete on national tests and may be eligible for scholarships.
Knowledge Master Open
Knowledge Master is an exciting, timed, computerized competition during the school day. Questions cover high school academic areas. The team receives a state and national ranking based on score.
Spell Bowl
Spell Bowl challenges students to learn a list of 3,500 spelling words from which students spell nine words in writing at competition where ten individuals make a team score. The competition and training build vocabulary for the SAT and college. Competitions include six invitationals, a regional, and state finals.
Future Problem Solving
Problem Solving is a 6-step creative problem-solving process related to a world problem that most likely has started to take place and may have disastrous effects in the future. Teams research the problem, are given a related scenario and then asked to complete six steps ending in a solution. Scenario writing is also a competition; an individual creates a futuristic short story based on research related to one of the topics for the year. Community problem solving is also a competition. The team identifies a real problem in the community and works toward a solution.
Academic Super Bowl - Social Studies
This is a research-based competition. Students study works and do research on a theme or era. There are five subject areas in which three students compete and one interdisciplinary round. Two invitational competitions in March and regional competition in April. Top teams advance to state finals.
Academic Super Bowl - Science
This is a research-based competition. Students study works and do research on a theme or era. Five subject areas in which three students compete and one interdisciplinary round in which four students compete. Two invitational competitions in March and regional competition in April. Top teams advance to state finals in May.
Academic Super Bowl - Mathematics
This is a research-based competition. Students study works and do research on a theme or era. Five subject areas in which three students compete and one interdisciplinary round in which four students compete. There are two invitational competitions in March and April. Top teams advance to state finals.
