Penn Girls Swimming owns 8-0 record in NIC action through Dec. 22

The Penn Girls Swim Team leads the Northern Indiana Conference standings with an 8-0 record in dual meets through Dec. 22. South Bend St. Joseph is second in the league with a 7-1 record.

Penn has two meets left, vs. Adams on Tuesday, Jan. 9, and vs. Marian on Thursday, Jan. 11.

Penn will clinch the regular-season title with a victory against Adams, since the tie-breaker is head-to-head competition, and the Kingsmen beat St. Joseph 116-70 on Dec. 18.

The overall NIC Championship is based on a combination of the regular-season standings and placing in the NIC meet, which is Saturday, Jan. 13.

Penn Boys Swimming 7-0 in NIC action through Dec. 22

Penn Boys Swimming is unbeaten through seven dual meets in Northern Indiana Conference action through Dec. 22.

Penn is 7-0, followed by New Prairie (5-1) and South Bend Riley (3-1). The Kingsmen have three meets left — against Adams (Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Penn), Marian (Thursday, Jan. 11, at Penn), and Mishawaka (Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Mishawaka).

The NIC meet is Saturday, Jan. 27, at Penn.

Penn defeated New Prairie, 140-45, on Dec. 14, and defeated Riley, 98-88, on Dec. 20.

The Kingsmen can clinch the NIC regular-season title by winning two of their remaining three meets. The overall NIC title is determined by regular-season finish and place in the NIC meet.

Wrestling: Penn places sixth in the Al Smith Invitational

Penn placed sixth in the prestigious Al Smith Invitational held at Mishawaka High School on Friday, Dec. 29, and Saturday, Dec. 30.

Indianapolis Cathedral won the 30-team event with 233 points. Penn scored 139.5 points for sixth place. Mishawaka placed seventh with 132 points.

Tanner DeMien (126) and Max Chaffee (182) led the Kingsmen effort with third-place finishes.

  • 138: Preston Risner, fifth.

Girls Basketball: Penn earns Penn Classic Championship

Penn Girls Basketball captured the Championship of the Penn Classic, beating Huntington North, 64-35, and then rolling past Morgan Township, 62-30, on Thursday, Dec. 28.

Tia Chambers led five Penn players in double figures in the game against Huntington North with 15 points.

Reganne Pate scored 12 points, Jordyn Smith scored 11 points and Makenzie Kilmer and Sara Doi scored 10 points each.

Tia Chambers also led Penn in scoring in the Championship Game, firing in 18 points.

Reganne Pate scored 11 points for Penn.

Wrestling: Penn places ninth in Team State Duals

Penn finished in ninth place in the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Team State Duals on Saturday, Dec. 23.Logan Hill (132), Jeffrey Harper (145), Max Chaffee (182) and Rockne Hurley (195) were undefeated in the Team State Duals for the Kingsmen.

Boys Basketball: Noah Krathwohl & Noah Applegate score 20 points each as Penn beats Elkhart Memorial

Noah Krathwohl and Noah Applegate scored 20 points each as Penn defeated Elkhart Memorial, 71-61, in high school basketball action on Friday, Dec. 22.

Applegate finished with a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds).

Drew Lutz also turned in a double-double for the Kingsmen with 12 points and 11 assists.

Beau Ludwick scored 12 points.

Penn bolted from a 34-33 halftime deficit to a 42-34 lead thanks to a 9-0 run to start the second half. Penn outscored Memorial 21-10 in the third quarter.

The Kingsmen of Al Rhodes are 5-1 and return to action on Friday, Jan. 5, at South Bend Adams.

Girls Basketball: Sara Doi scores 18 points as Penn outlasts Valparaiso

Sara Doi scored 18 of Penn's 36 points as the Kingsmen defeated Duneland Conference power Valparaiso, 36-31, on Friday, Dec. 22.

Tia Chambers scored 10 points for the Kingsmen.

Boys Basketball: Kingsmen use 26-5 run to storm past New Prairie

Penn outscored New Prairie 26-5 in the third quarter and stormed past the host Cougars, 68-44, on Wednesday, Dec. 20,  in high school basketball action.

All-State candidate Noah Applegate led the Kingsmen with 26 points. Applegate, a 6-foot-6 Junior, averages 26 points a game for Penn.

Kegan Hoskins scored 12 points for Penn, and Beau Ludwick scored 10. Noah Krathwohl scored eighth points.
