NOTE from DR. CARLIN:

Students should bring pencils, a notebook, a folder, a calculator, and a copy of Official SAT Study Guide, 2016 Edition ($17-20 on Amazon) or a copy of the Real ACT Prep Guide, 2016 Edition  ($16-20 on Amazon), depending on the course selected.

Dr. Carlin will provide each student necessary class handouts as part of the course.

Please note, there is significant crossover between the ACT and "New" SAT exams.  In addition, every college and university accepts BOTH the ACT and the SAT, and colleges and universities will evaluate a student on whichever score is higher (based on the ACT/SAT Concordance Scale).  Essentially, taking two tests provide a student two different keys that could unlock the same door to college acceptance or scholarship money.  These courses will help students figure out their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to each test and how to utilize testing strategies with one exam and carry them over to success on the other. Nearly every student eventually scores HIGHER on one of the two tests.  However, students need the opportunity to discover which test is a better fit.

To give you some background about me, I am the Founder & CEO of Dr. Carlin's Test Prep and College Consulting based in Buchanan, Michigan. I have been regularly hosting SAT and ACT courses at roughly two dozen Michigan and Indiana high schools (and now online in Live, Webinar format) for the past 6 years.  I have been working with students on the ACT both individually and in formal classes for the past 18 years.

I am a Buchanan High School Grad ('93), a University of Notre Dame B.A. ('97) and M.Ed ('03) and earned my Ph.D. from Michigan State ('10).  I also work with high school staffs on Professional Development and how to incorporate the ACT or New SAT into the classroom curriculum throughout the year.  In addition, I work with students and parents on the college application process, including essay revision, resume pieces and scholarship applications.

I am excited about the opportunity to work with your students in the coming weeks.

I will continue to send you updates on the course, (including materials that will help in their preparation) what we are doing in each course, what students could be doing to PRACTICE between sessions and what this all means in the "big picture" from a college perspective.   I also hope to host a parent session in the Fall, so parents can ask questions about testing, college apps, and the college readiness process in general.

If you have any questions whatsoever, please don't hesitate to reach out by phone, text, or email.

Click here for a Notre Dame campus map

  • To participate, you would have needed to have earned 33 credits by the end of the fourth nine weeks of the school year.  Your counselor would have met with you if there was a problem.

  • We want to include as many students as possible.

  • Caps and gowns may be purchased  by going to Jostens.com to order.

  • Be at Purcell Pavilion at Notre Dame by 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 26.

  • Appropriate dress is required (see Senior Recognition Night requirements above).

  • Please have your parents drop you off at Gate 10 (south side of building, in front of Purcell Pavillion).

  • Do not put your gown on until you get inside the north dome, where Penn personnel will check you in.  You will go through Notre Dame security first, and they will make you take your gown off, if you are wearing one.

  • Please be aware that Commencement is considered a solemn occasion.  Whooping, yelling, cheering, noisemakers of any kind will delay the commencement ceremony and may even temporarily stop it.  Some cheering makes it difficult for everyone’s name to be heard when called by the reader. We want everyone’s family to hear their student’s name when read.

  • Do not bring valuables to Commencement!  Men, do not bring anything that can’t fit in your pant pockets. Ladies, you may bring a small clutch handbag if you need to bring anything.

  • NO CELL PHONES!

  • You will be checked by Notre Dame security.  They will take phones, electronics and non-essentials and place them all in a box for pick-up after commencement.

  • Once inside the north dome of Purcell Pavilion, you will find your name on the seating chart.  Go to your seat and sit down.  Counselors will check everyone in and take attendance.  Please make sure to complete the Google document that we sent you, which includes the phonetic pronunciation of your name.

  • When you walk, you will receive a blank diploma cover from the presenter on the stage.

  • Senior grades are due at noon on Thursday, June 9.

  • Your counselor will contact you if there is a course you’ll need to make up in summer school and your diploma will be pulled until you meet the required class or classes.  If you believe that you will not make it in a course needed to graduate, please see your counselor ASAP.

  • If you have concerns about a particular class, SEE YOUR COUNSELOR NOW!

  • Summer school (Seniors will go to summer night school) FREE.  You can sign up in the book store.

  • Counselors will review all transcripts and ready diplomas for pick-up inside Door A on Tuesday, June 20, from 9 a.m.-to-3 p.m.  There will be a letter in place of your diploma if you have a summer class to make up.  Your diploma will be available to you after you have completed the summer course.  Contact the main office at that time.

  • The cost of replacement diplomas is $40! (Don’t lose the one we give you!).

RIGHT NOW

Each student attending post-secondary education must send an eighth-semester transcript to the college or university you will attend.  If you are attending the school you applied to using the Common Application, please complete one of the blue eighth-semester transcript request forms.  If you are not attending your Common App school, please go to Parchment to send your final, eighth-semester transcript.

  • You will be sent a link to the Learnmore survey via e-mail.  Please complete it prior to leaving for the summer.

Parent Academy of Penn High School

Parent Academy logo

Penn High School Principal Steve Hope, and Penn Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) president Ann Amico Moran, announced the formation of Parent Academy, a program designed to provide parents with important parenting resources as they guide their children through high school.

The first Parent Academy presentation, “Trends in Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Use”, will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, in the LGI-A (enter through Door A).

The featured speaker will be Bryan Fox, a 22-year Mishawaka Police Department veteran and Certified Drug Recognition Expert.

“The Penn PTO Parent Academy is a chance for parents to hear about pertinent issues from drug use to study skills,” Hope said. “The Penn PTO will continue to bring relevant information to Penn parents to support the P-H-M triangle of success — parents, teachers and students.

“These parent nights are an opportunity to not only learn, but to share,” Hope continued. “There will be question and answer sessions associated with each academy night.”

Moran encouraged Penn parents to take advantage of the Parent Academy presentations.

“As parents of teens, we are faced with complicated scenarios with little formal training on how to navigate them successfully,” Moran stated. “The Penn High School PTO wishes to address some of the "hottest" issues happening with our teens here at Penn High School through the Penn Parent Forum.  We will bring together experts and real parents to discuss topics that many of us have a hard time navigating, let alone admit that our teens are faced with the topics on a daily basis.

“The Penn PTO feels it is important to start the conversation so that we can guide our teens in the best way we can,” Moran added.  “We hope that you will join us for the open presentations and dialogue at these presentations.”

The concept of the “Parent Academy” emerged from several conversations between the Penn PTO and Hope, with the goal of creating a regular series of community outreach events.

In addition to educating our student population, Penn High School is committed to educating the community about a wide range of topics geared to support the parents of Penn High School students.

The first Parent Academy presentation, “Trends in Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Use”, features Bryan Fox, a 22-year Mishawaka Police Department veteran and Certified Drug Recognition Expert.

Fox brings his expertise and knowledge of current drug trends to the Penn PTO Parent Academy Night. Fox is a familiar face at Penn High School. He has been a part-time School Resource Officer at Penn for the last nine years and has spoken to Penn freshmen students about the dangers of drinking and driving and drug use for the last eight years. As a Certified Drug Recognition Expert, Fox is specially trained to use his knowledge of physiology, to recognize not only the signs of impairment in an individual, but specifically what types of drugs a person may be using.

Future topics include:

  • Navigating the college process (applying for college, applying for scholarships, filling out financial aid forms).
  • Technology (Skyward and Canvas help).
  • General wellness and mental health support (suicide prevention, self-esteem, body image).
  • How to be a good Penn Parent (assisting the transition from middle school to high school, supporting a successful academic and social experience in high school.
  • Cyber security (online persona, screen addiction).
  • LGBTQ support.
