Drew Lutz’s 7-0 run ignites Penn explosion in 2 OT in Kingsmen win vs. Northridge

Penn point guard Drew Lutz scored the first seven points of the second overtime to ignite a 17-point Kingsmen explosion in the period and help Penn outlast Northridge, 78-67, in a double-overtime high school basketball battle on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Penn outscored Northridge 17-6 in the second overtime.

Penn Head Coach Al Rhodes praised the defensive effort of the Kingsmen, which held Northridge scoreless in the first overtime.

“A huge key to the win was the defensive work of Beau Ludwick, Drew Schneider, and Luke Carlton!!!” Rhodes said.

“Lutz’s 7-0 run featured three fearless driving lay-ups (including an And-1) as the Kingsmen bolted to the victory after a scoreless first overtime period.

Lutz finished with 21 points, six assists and six rebounds. He also nailed a buzzer-beater 3 at the end of the third quarter to give Penn a 50-49 lead.

Noah Applegate and Kegan Hoskins each posted a double-double for Penn.

Applegate led the Kingsmen with 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Hoskins scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Lutz, Applegate and Hoskins are all juniors.

Penn Girls Swim Team wins 22nd consecutive NIC Championship

Penn's Girls Swim Team earned its 22nd consecutive Northern Indiana Conference Championship.

The Kingsmen placed second to South Bend St. Joseph in the NIC meet on Saturday, Jan. 13, but the Kingsmen were undefeated and won the regular-season crown, with St. Joe placing second in the regular season.

Penn won the NIC Championship by virtue of the tiebreaker, which was Penn beating St. Joseph in the head-to-head regular-season competition.

Makenna Bottorff and Maddie Ziegert won NIC Championships in four events each.

Penn Wrestling claims NIC Championship

Penn High School boasted six individual champions and stormed to the Northern Indiana Conference Championship at the league meet on Saturday, Jan. 13.

The Kingsmen of Coach Brad Harper finished with 292 points. Mishawaka finished with 219 points.

Penn’s title is the eighth in a row for the Kingsmen.

Penn's Tanner DeMien started off the Kingsmen championship parade when he captured the 126-pound weight class NIC Championship with a pin in 1:39.

Michael Garcia, a last-minute entry at 160 due to the illness of Kingsmen starter Colin Wilson, pulled off a series of upsets to claim the NIC crown. He won the final with a 5-2 decision.

Noah Brown earned the NIC title at 170 with an 8-3 victory in the final.

Max Chaffee's pin in 5:43 earned him the 182 NIC title.

Rockne Hurley captured the NIC Championship at 195 with a thrilling 2-1 victory in double overtime.

Adam Berta claimed the NIC crown in the 220 division with a pin in 2:45.

Sara Doi’s 15 points lead Penn past Fort Wayne Southside

Senior guard Sara Doi scored 15 points, and senior post Tia Chambers added 11 points as the Penn Girls Basketball Team defeated Fort Wayne Southside, 47-41, on Saturday, Jan. 13.

Penn improved to 19-1. Southside is 16-4.

Jordyn Smith scored 8 points for the Kingsmen.

Next up for the Kingsmen is a Northern Indiana Conference game at South Bend St. Joseph on Thursday, Jan. 18.

The Kingsmen can clinch the NIC title with a victory at St. Joe.

Penn is 10-0 in the league entering the game. St. Joseph is 9-1.

Each team has two games remaining the NIC, including Thursday's game.

Drew Lutz scored 21 points and Kegan Hoskins added 19, but the Kingsmen lost to Fort Wayne Carroll, 80-63, on Saturday, Jan. 13.

Carroll improves to 9-2.

Penn is 6-3.

Lutz also had six assists, and Hoskins pulled down eight rebounds.

Noah Applegate scored nine points, and Beau Ludwick scored eight points.

Penn’s wrestling team defeated Clay High School 63-10 on Senior Night.

Penn Boys & Girls Swim Teams sweep Marian on Senior Night

The Penn Boys & Girls Swim Teams dominated to earn a sweep of Marian on Thursday, Jan. 11.

The Penn Boys Swim Team beat Marian 136-43.

Axel Brandenburg, Troy Weber, Brad Pierce and Matt Rach won three blue ribbons each.

Ethan Backhus placed first in two events.

Penn’s Girls Swim Team beat Marian 149-35.

Makenna Bottorff placed first in three events.

Caroline Marks, Sydney Acito and Maddie Ziegert placed first in two events each.

Beau Ludwick & Noah Krathwohl lead Penn Boys Basketball defensive effort in win vs. Glenn

A lock-down defensive effort spearheaded by Beau Ludwick and Noah Krathwohl highlighted Penn’s 64-40 victory against Glenn on Thursday, Jan. 11.

The Kingsmen handed Glenn its first loss in Northern Indiana Conference competition.

Penn improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the NIC.

Glenn is 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the NIC.

“Excellent defensive work by the Kingsmen was the key to an important NIC win,” Penn Head Coach Al Rhodes said. “Led by Beau Ludwick and Noah Krathwohl on Glenn’s top two scorers, the Kingsmen held Glenn to four points in the second quarter.

“Kegan Hoskins and Noah Applegate led a strong rebounding effort that triggered the Kingsmen fastbreak offense,” Rhodes continued. “This was an excellent team effort! The next game versus Carroll on Saturday will be another quality test for our team.”

Penn High School All-State Candidate Noah Applegate, a 6-foot-6 Junior wing, pumped in 21 points and soared for eight rebounds.

Kegan Hoskins muscled inside for nine points and 11 rebounds.

Drew Lutz scored 11 points and passed for eight assists.

Noah Krathwohl scored eight points.

Snowball Dance set for 7:30-11 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14

The SNOWBALL DANCE will be held on Sunday, Jan. 14, from 7:30-11 p.m. in the Main Arena at Penn High School.

Sara Doi scores 21 points in Penn’s 65-25 victory against Merrillville in Girls Basketball

Sara Doi scored 21 points and the Penn Kingsmen rolled past Merrillville, 65-25, Tuesday, Jan. 9, in high school girls basketball action.

Reganne Pate scored 15. Trinity Clinton scored 7 points, Jordyn Smith, Tia Chambers and Grace Adams scored 6 points each.

Penn beat Merrillville 52-6 in the Junior Varsity Game.

Delayne Sanchez and Shelby Rowe scored 11 points each for the Kingsmen.
